Direct answer: Repair a Utah roof when the damage is local, like a few missing shingles, a flashing leak or one storm-hit slope. Consider restoration when asphalt shingles are aging but still in place and the deck is sound. Replace when shingles or decking have failed across the roof. A professional inspection, not a product, should make the call.

The roof decides, not the product

The NuRoof Guys Utah work by one tagline: Repair, Restore, or Replace. The point is simple: the roof decides, not the product. An honest no is what makes the yes worth trusting.

That means we don’t start with what we want to sell. We start with what the roof shows us. If you already know you’re weighing restoration against a tear-off, our earlier guide, Roof Replacement or Restoration in Utah, covers that comparison. This guide is the step before it: sorting signs into three buckets.

One safety note before anything else: you don’t need to get on your roof for any of this. Look from the ground, from a window, or in the gutters and attic, and leave the roof itself to a crew with proper fall protection.

Signs that point to repair

Repair fits when the problem is limited and the rest of the roof is in good shape. Common examples:

  • A few shingles missing or creased after a Wasatch wind event.
  • A leak traced to one spot, such as flashing around a chimney, vent pipe or skylight.
  • Damaged or lifted ridge caps.
  • A stain on one ceiling area, with the attic dry everywhere else.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association’s homeowner guide describes shingles as one part of a roof system that also includes starter strips, hip and ridge caps, ventilation, underlayment, and ice and water barriers in vulnerable areas such as eaves, valleys and flashings. InterNACHI’s roof inspection course for home inspectors likewise covers flashing, valleys, deck sheathing and the roof covering as separate topics. Because a roof is a set of parts, one bad detail, like a flashing or a vent pipe, can often be found and fixed without touching the whole roof.

Repair also comes first on any roof headed for restoration. Leaks and failed flashing get fixed before anything else is considered.

Signs that point to restoration

GoNano restoration is aimed at asphalt shingle roofs that are aging but still sound. The NuRoof Guys Utah are an authorized GoNano installer in Utah, and we only recommend it when the inspection supports it. Signs a roof may be a candidate:

  • Shingles look faded, dry or weathered, but they’re still lying flat and in place.
  • Some granules show up in the gutters, without widespread bald spots. (Our granule loss guide explains what normal and heavy loss look like.)
  • The deck feels solid and the attic shows no widespread rot or moisture.
  • Any leaks or flashing problems have been, or can be, repaired first.

Utah’s high-elevation sun and freeze-thaw swings are hard on asphalt, so many roofs here age on the surface while the structure stays solid. That’s the group restoration is meant for. For a longer checklist, see Is Your Utah Roof a Candidate for Rejuvenation?

We are careful about what we claim. As quoted on our GoNano FAQ, the GoNano white paper says its treatment “is not a universal substitute for roof replacement” and that effectiveness “depends on roof age, condition, and remaining structural integrity at the time of application.” Any test results in that paper were measured under tested conditions, not on your specific roof. Where a qualified roof gets restored, warranty coverage is up to 15 years on qualified roofs; ask us for the written terms.

Signs that point to replacement

Replacement is the right answer when the roof has failed beyond a local area. Signs include:

  • Shingles curling, cupping, cracking or breaking across many slopes.
  • Large bald areas where granules are gone and the dark asphalt shows.
  • A sagging roofline, or soft or rotted decking found during inspection.
  • Leaks in several places, or repeated leaks after repairs.
  • Widespread hail or wind damage that an insurance adjuster may also need to see.

The GoNano white paper says it directly: where shingles show advanced structural failure or extensive material loss, “replacement remains the appropriate intervention.” That’s the honest no. If your roof is here, we’ll tell you, and we won’t try to talk you into a treatment it can’t benefit from.

Why an inspection decides, not a checklist

Many of these signs overlap. Granules in the gutter can mean normal aging or a roof near its end. A ceiling stain can be one flashing detail or a failing deck. You can’t always tell from the yard, and you shouldn’t try to tell from the roof.

A proper inspection looks at the shingles, flashing, penetrations, ventilation, attic and deck together, then puts the roof in one bucket. Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Utah roof needs repair or replacement?

If damage is limited to one area, such as a few missing shingles or a flashing leak, repair usually fits. If shingles are failing across many slopes or the deck is soft, replacement is usually needed. An inspection confirms which applies.

Is roof restoration right for every roof?

No. Restoration is meant for aging asphalt shingle roofs that are still structurally sound. Roofs with advanced failure or extensive material loss need replacement. The inspection decides.

Can I check my roof myself?

You can look from the ground, through a window, in the gutters and in the attic. Don’t climb onto the roof. Leave on-roof checks to a crew using fall protection.

Does a roof get repaired before restoration?

Yes. Leaks and failed flashing are repaired first. Restoration only makes sense on a roof that is otherwise sound.

What warranty comes with GoNano restoration?

Up to 15 years on qualified roofs. Ask The NuRoof Guys Utah for the written terms that apply to your roof.

How much does it cost to repair, restore, or replace a roof in Utah?

It depends on your roof’s size, condition and which path it needs. The NuRoof Guys Utah give a free inspection quote with a recommendation and price for your roof.
