Roof Repair, Restoration and Replacement in Ogden, Utah

Repair, Restore, or Replace. Ogden has some of the oldest homes on the Wasatch Front, its own historic districts, and canyon winds that are part of the weather record. The NuRoof Guys, a licensed Utah roofing contractor, start every Ogden job with a free roof inspection and an honest recommendation.

Older housing changes the roof conversation

Census estimates for 2020–2024 put the median year Ogden homes were built at 1966. By our arithmetic from the same Census table, more than half of Ogden's housing units were built before 1980, and about one in five before 1940. Compare that with Layton (median 1993) or Clinton (median 2000) and you can see why an Ogden inspection often starts with questions a newer subdivision wouldn't raise: layers of past roofing, original board decking, chimneys and flashing that have been patched more than once, and attic ventilation that predates current practice.

None of that means a roof is bad. It means the first job is to look.

Historic neighborhoods: check before you re-roof

Ogden City lists three historic districts: 25th Street, Eccles and Jefferson. National Register records describe the Jefferson Avenue Historic District, along Jefferson Avenue between 25th and 27th Streets, as a residential area built mostly between 1882 and 1910. The Eccles Avenue Historic District, between 25th and 26th Streets and Van Buren and Jackson Avenues, was laid out starting in 1909, and its nomination says the Prairie Style dominates the district.

That matters for roofing. Ogden's application for a Certificate of Historic Appropriateness says the certificate is written authorization from the Landmarks Commission that's needed before any permit is issued for work affecting a resource on the Ogden City Register of Historic Resources. Re-roofs do go before the commission. On May 28, 2026, its agenda included a request to replace metal roofing on a detached garage in the Eccles district with charcoal asphalt shingles and add solar panels. If your home is in one of these districts, check with Ogden Planning before you sign a replacement contract. We'll help you document the existing roof for the application.

Cold mornings, hot afternoons, and canyon winds

Downtown Ogden sits at about 4,300 feet (USGS), with the East Bench climbing toward the mountains. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for the Ogden Pioneer Park station show roughly 21.6 inches of precipitation a year, lows at or below 32°F on about 117 days, and highs of 90°F or more on about 51 days. A shingle roof in Ogden goes through both extremes every year. We explain the aging side in why Northern Utah asphalt roofs age faster and the winter side in ice dams and freeze-thaw on Northern Utah roofs.

Ogden City's design criteria list a ground snow load of 43–50 pounds per square foot (refined by Utah State University's snow-load map), a design wind speed of 115 or 120 mph, a weathering rating of "Severe," a 30-inch frost line, and ice-barrier underlayment as required. Those are design values for new construction, not promises about any particular roof. Still, ice-barrier underlayment is a line worth finding on any Ogden replacement proposal.

The Utah Center for Climate and Weather describes easterly canyon winds that gust out of the canyon mouths and damage property in Weber and Davis counties. Its example: gusts of 103 mph at Ogden on April 4, 1983. More recently, the National Weather Service logged 45 mph gusts at Ogden-Hinckley Airport and 2.41 inches of rain at an Ogden station near 4,580 feet as the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel came through in October 2026. In winter, Utah DEQ notes that inversions often follow snowstorms, trapping cold air on the valley floor for days at a time.

Repair, Restore, or Replace in Ogden

Repair. When a specific failure is the problem, such as a cracked pipe boot, lifted flashing around an old chimney, or a few wind-damaged shingles, we repair it and photograph the result. See roof repair.

Restore (GoNano). GoNano roof treatments are for aging asphalt shingle roofs that are still structurally sound. The GoNano white paper describes the system as "a cold-applied, nano-engineered treatment designed to penetrate below the shingle surface" (p. 4), rather than a film that sits on top. Restoration is not right for every roof, and on Ogden's older homes we often find roofs that are past it. The inspection decides, and we'll say so plainly. When a roof qualifies, the warranty is up to 15 years on qualified roofs, backed by a GoNano warranty. Ask us for the written terms. The NuRoof Guys are an authorized GoNano installer. Read how to tell if your roof is a rejuvenation candidate, the GoNano FAQ, or our page on authorized GoNano installation in Utah. GoNano is a trademark of its owner.

Replace. When shingles, decking or old layers have failed, replacement is the right call. On older Ogden homes, a replacement proposal should spell out tear-off, decking repairs and ice-barrier underlayment. See roof replacement and roof replacement or restoration in Utah.

Ogden roof FAQ

Do I need city approval to re-roof a historic home in Ogden?

If your property is on the Ogden City Register of Historic Resources, yes. The city requires a Certificate of Historic Appropriateness from the Landmarks Commission before it issues permits for that work. Check with Ogden Planning to confirm your address.

Can an older Ogden roof be restored instead of replaced?

Sometimes. GoNano roof treatments are only for aging shingles that are still structurally sound. Many older Ogden roofs have failed shingles or decking and need replacement. A free inspection tells you which applies to yours.

What should an Ogden roof replacement proposal include?

At minimum: tear-off of the old layers, inspection and repair of the decking, flashing details, ventilation, and ice-barrier underlayment, which Ogden's design criteria list as required. Ask for it all in writing.

What should I check after a canyon wind event?

Only what you can see from the ground: shingle pieces in the yard, lifted edges, bent flashing, dented gutters, and new ceiling stains. Take dated photos and don't climb a ladder. Then book a professional inspection. Our Utah roof maintenance checklist covers safe ground checks.

How much does GoNano restoration cost compared with a new roof?

It depends on your roof. Restoration is only offered on roofs that qualify, and your written quote comes after the free inspection.
